Nagano Prefecture is located in the central Highlands of the Japanese archipelago. As the crossroads between eastern and western Japan, and between the littorals of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan, from ancient times it has been the site for the interaction of a number of cultures. As a result, Nagano Prefecture has fostered an individual climate and culture.

The Museum of History has been eatablished so that the citizens of the Prefecture, and people from other regions of Japan as well as from overseas, may, through the medium of priceless cultural artifacts, deepen their appreciation and understanding of the history of Nagano that has formed such a climate and culture. It is hoped that the Museum, building upon this historical course and legacy, may become a site for the emergence of a new cuilture.

The Museum houses such rooms as a permanent display room, a special exhibitions room, a library reading and reference room, a visual media room, and a lecture hall. It is possible to peruse the artifacts, literature and other holdings of historical materials. Further, we are happy to respond to inquiries and discuss our investigative research projects.

Operation of the Museum of History

The Museum is divided into three divisions, namely central information, archaeological materials, and documentary materials. These divisions work together in promoting the collection, cataloging, and preservation of historical materials and in investigative research. Beyond this, in response to the historical interests of the citizens of the prefecture, the Museum engages in a wide range of planned activities such as exhibitions, provision of historical information, and lectures and seminars.
